What is Ethereum (ETH)?
Ethereum (ETH) is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market value and the world's largest smart contract platform. It was created in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum is not just money — it is a programmable blockchain that runs decentralised applications (dApps), DeFi protocols and NFTs.
ETH is Ethereum's native cryptocurrency, used to pay transaction fees (gas) and for staking. In 2022, Ethereum switched to a Proof of Stake mechanism ("The Merge"), which reduced energy consumption by ~99.9% and enabled ETH staking.
